I’m not going to lie, I struggle with sharing. I grew up as an only child and spent most of MY childhood playing with MY stuff. I remember moving into a dorm and having girls want to share my clothes. It completely freaked me out. I crave those kinds of close relationships, but it felt invasive, even threatening. Stupid, right?
Think about how many teachers treat their classroom ideas like the clothes in my closet. “They’re mine,” “I worked hard for those,” and on and on our reasons for withholding continue.
I was very lucky, during my first year of teaching, to have a team leader that modeled collaboration before it was a buzz word. Whatever she was doing in her class and thought I might like, she made a copy and placed it in my box. And when I failed to do the same, she asked for my ideas.
It’s such a simple thing really: sharing and valuing others. It ‘s foundational. Yet how often is it overlooked. Educating kids is not a singular activity that happens behind the doors in my classroom. It’s the totality of all their classrooms. Let’s move beyond thinking small, thinking about this year and “our” class and learn to invest in the bigger picture.
